Southern Ocean 2007

Blizzard Expedition Southern Ocean Traverse

With the goal in mind to row across the Indian Ocean in 2009 with partner Ryan Storey, Clark needed some sea experience and fast!

This is where it pays to have friends in the biz - a friend of friend and now good friend, David Pryce - owner and skipper of Antarctic expedition yacht ‘Blizzard’ – casually mentioned that he has a boat that he needs to sail across the Southern Ocean from Hobart, Tasmania to Puerto Montt, Chile and invited me to help sail her for the 40 or so days, via the sub-Antarctic islands! The voyage ended up taking 39 days and was on hell of a steep learning curve for Clark, who’s previous sea experience was limited to surfing and swimming at the beach. We had snow, 55 knot winds, hail and snow as we made our merry way almost 10,000 kilometers across the roaring forties and furious fifties of the Southern Ocean, hand steering most of the way. It was a fantastic experience and really did instill some much needed respect for the Ocean!
